Hive Sessions: Digital Marketing for Startups

    March 19, 2026

In a time when new businesses are striving to stand out in the market, knowledge makes the difference between a startup that succeeds and one that goes unnoticed. That is why we continue with Hive Sessions – a series of events dedicated to education, networking, and practical support for freelancers, small businesses, and entrepreneurs with big ideas.

In the latest session, on the topic of “Digital Marketing for Startups,” we had the opportunity to hear an inspiring and practical lecture from Dr. Dimitar Jovevski, professor at the Faculty of Economics in Skopje and Director of Development at the marketing agency Piksel – one of the pioneers of digital marketing in the Macedonian market. We organized the event together with our partners Quipu and Mastercard, and it took place at Startup Club Skopje, where knowledge, ideas, and the energy of a community eager to grow came together.

As Professor Jovevski explained, for startups, digital marketing is not just an alternative to traditional methods – it is a necessity. When resources are limited and ambitions are high, creative, accessible, and measurable marketing solutions become the most powerful tool of every entrepreneur.

Through practical examples and a systematic approach, participants were introduced to two essential models for building a digital strategy:

    1. The Internet Marketing Tree

This model depicts digital marketing as a living organism with four basic “roots”:

    • Research – Analysis of the competition, the market, and the needs of the target audience
    • Strategy – Setting goals, selecting channels, and planning activities
    • Branding – Building a visual and communication identity that tells the startup’s story
    • Content – Creating relevant materials that capture and hold the audience’s attention

    2. Inbound Marketing Methodology – a Methodology for Attracting, not Persuading

This approach is built on creating long-term relationships through:

    • Attracting the right audience via blogs, videos, and SEO
    • Converting visitors into potential customers through newsletters and CTAs
    • Closing the process with personalized communication and offers

Jovevski emphasized that every startup must have:

    • A website or at least a landing page as a primary digital presence
    • Active social media – especially on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn
    • SEO optimization – key to being found online
      • Email marketing with tools like Mailchimp for cost-effective, direct communication
    • Video content – the format with the highest engagement today
    • AI tools like Canva, MidJourney, and Kapwing – for creating visual content

Additionally, before launching a campaign, it is essential to define the ideal customer: who they are, what they are interested in, and where they spend their time online. Trying to “reach everyone” rarely ends successfully – a focused approach is far more effective.

During the event, the professor also shared several strategies for those seeking accelerated growth:

    • Lean marketing – minimizing costs and maximizing the use of existing resources
    • Growth hacking – creative, unconventional techniques for rapid growth
    • Partnerships – collaborating with other small businesses or communities that share similar target audiences

As part of the event, attendees also had the opportunity to learn about our Startup Package – a solution we created specifically for new businesses that want to grow smartly. The package includes banking and non-financial services, easy communication with experts, connection to a network of small and medium-sized entrepreneurs, and access to practical tools and education.

We believe that every good idea deserves a chance to succeed. That is why we connect the people, knowledge, and resources that make a difference.
